What is a system of inequalities? A system of inequalities is two or more inequalities that pertain to the same problem. In order to solve the system, we will need to graph two inequalities on the same graph and then be able to identify the areas of intersection on the graph. Take a look at a graph for a system of inequalities and then we will walk through a few examples step-by-step.

Notice how we still use solid and dotted boundary lines based on the inequality symbol. You will also use a test point and shade the half plane that contains all solutions, just as we discussed in the graphing inequalities lesson. The only difference for this lesson will be that we must graph two inequalities on the same graph and then identify the area shaded by BOTH inequalities.

Not too bad, is it? It might help for you to have two different colored pencils if you are practicing along with me. If you don't have colored pencils, then you can draw horizontal lines for one inequality and vertical lines for the other.

This will make it easier to see which area contains solutions for both inequalities. Horizontal and vertical lines only have 1 variable. Try our practice problems!

Algebra Class. Steps for Graphing Systems of Inequalities Graph the boundary line for the first inequality. Use a test point to determine which half plane to shade. Shade the half plane that contains the solutions to the first inequality.

Graph the boundary line for the second inequality. Shade the half plane that contains the solutions to the second inequality. Analyze your system of inequalities and determine which area is shaded by BOTH inequalities.

This area is the solution for the system of inequalities. Need Help? Try This Online Calculator! This activity is designed to help students with graphing systems of linear inequalities or for writing the inequalities from graphs. There are a lot of little elements that you need to know in order to graph a system of inequalities. Much of it is the same as graphing a line, but we will go through all of it one step at a time. The second inequality is ok, but we have to change the first one.

Step Two: Take one inequality at a time and graph. Find this value on the y-axis and plot a point. So, our starting point is at -1 on the y-axis. This first example is a solid line. So we have:. So we now have:. Step Four: We have to shade in part of our graph since there is more than one value that will work in our system of inequalities.

Our final graph should look like:. Sketch the solution to each system of inequalities. This free worksheet contains 10 assignments each with 24 questions with answers.

Example of one question:. Terms of Use Privacy Policy. So we have: Now, we have to do this all over again with the second inequality! So we now have: Step Four: We have to shade in part of our graph since there is more than one value that will work in our system of inequalities.

Example of one question: Watch below how to solve this example:. Algebra and Pre-Algebra. Back to Top.The objective of this lesson is to solve a system of inequalities, so I begin by accessing the students' prior knowledge of solving a linear equation and a linear inequality in one variable.

I allow the students 5 minutes to complete the Warm-Up. I review the warm up with the class to introduce the lesson. After the warmup, the main purpose of today's lesson is to build on known concepts by making connections.

First, to solving a linear inequality in two variables and then to solving a system of linear inequalities in two variables. I discuss with the students how inequalities place restrictions on the problem, but there are many solutions. These restrictions I refer to as boundaries or constraints.

I set up the notes for students. My plan is for them to develop an understanding of how the symbols are related to the solutions of the inequality. We will also review the meaning of this relationship.

After completing the Guided Notes, students should recognize that solutions are contained in the intersection of the shaded regions, and, on the solid boundary lines in some cases. Throughout the warm up, guided notes, practice, and lesson, students should gain a conceptual understanding of why these different methods for solving a system of equations work.

I ask the following questions throughout the lesson. While students are working the Independent Practicethey are allowed to talk with their assigned elbow partner for math questions, but they must stay on task. I walk around the room while students are working to monitor progress and to assist students one on one or in pairs as needed. I use these questions continue to guide students forward in their productive struggle. In the last problem, students have not been introduced to graphing quadratic functions this year.

Some students do remember graphing quadratics previously in 8th grade. This provides a good teaching moment to discuss a strategy to use when graphing an unfamiliar function. A t-table is a strategy to use to substitute random numbers for x and solve for y to determine the points of the graph and the shape of the function.

In closing, we discuss how a linear inequality in one variable can be graphed on the number line or on a coordinate plane. If the inequality has only one variable, a 0 must be entered as the coefficient for the other variable.

In doing so, you can treat the inequality like an equation. This will form the "boundary" of the inequality -- on one side of the line the condition will be true, on the other side it will not. Review how to graph a line here. Notice that it is true when y is less than or equal to. In step 3 we plotted the line the equal-to caseso now we need to account for the less-than case. Since y is less than a particular value on the low-side of the axis, we will shade the region below the line to indicate that the inequality is true for all points below the line:.

Plug in a point not on the line, like 0,0. Verify that the inequality holds. We have shaded the correct side of the line. Notice that this inequality is already in the slope-intercept form. I will replace the given inequality symbol for the equal symbol to plot the line. Since this is a case where the inequality is true for y values greater than or equal to something, we have shaded the area above the line. Again, select any point above the graph line to make sure that it will satisfy or reveal a TRUE statement in terms of the original inequality.

For example, 5,3. Since that point was above our line, it should be shaded, which verifies our solution. A system of inequalities has more than one inequality statement that must be satisfied.

Graphically, it means we need to do what we just did -- plot the line represented by each inequality -- and then find the region of the graph that is true for BOTH inequalities. For the two examples above, we can combine both graphs and plot the area shared by the two inequalities. What is the solution set?

Apollo client add bearer tokenSince y is less than a particular value on the low-side of the axis, we will shade the region below the line to indicate that the inequality is true for all points below the line: 5 Verify. Now plot that line as shown: Since this is a case where the inequality is true for y values greater than or equal to something, we have shaded the area above the line. Multiple inequalities - a system of inequalities A system of inequalities has more than one inequality statement that must be satisfied.
